Gouache on wood canvas
14" x 11"
Nov. 2023
This self-portrait explores themes of mental health and the journey of life.
I've had a Pothos plant in my room that I got from a plant shop for about 2-3 years that continues to strive no matter the conditions. Pothos are native to Southeast Asia and Western Pacific islands. They are extremely forgiving of missed waterings or change of light, which makes them a great beginner-friendly plant.
The use of a Pothos plant in this painting represents my unwillingness to give up, no matter how hard something may seem. I am extremely resilient and can adapt to new climates, just like the Pothos.
PROCESS
I started with drawing the initial sketch to map down my features, then I began painting. It was until after I finished the self-portrait that I decided to incorporate the Pothos vines.
